Location Dubbo, NSW
Industry: Rail / Transport Infrastructure / Maintenance Facilities
Applications:
Train maintenance lighting, workshop lighting, roadway and carpark illumination, perimeter & security lighting
Products Installed:
- MegaFlood Floodlights (40 W–200 W),
- Sentry Wall Pack Series,
- DALI-controlled luminaires
Momentum Trains, operator of Transport for NSW’s new regional rail fleet, developed a state-of-the-art 25-hectare maintenance facility in Dubbo to support 24/7 servicing operations.
As the site is powered by solar and battery storage, the lighting system needs to be future-proof, energy-efficient and capable of delivering uniform performance across both indoor and outdoor maintenance areas.
Tigerlight was engaged to design a comprehensive lighting design using the MegaFlood modular platform to ensure full compliance with safety, environmental and operational standards, including strict limits on obtrusive light and upward spill due to the site’s proximity to the Coonabarabran Observatory.
Key Outcomes
- 840+ luminaires installed across a 25-hectare facility
- T4M and T4S optics for engineered, low-spill distribution
- 80 lux achieved in external maintenance zones
- 3000 K, 80 CRI for clarity in indoor maintenance areas
- Full DALI lighting control for advanced management
- Zero upward light spill ensuring dark-sky compliance
- Remote driver configuration to reduce future maintenance
- Lighting designed to protect nearby residential boundaries
The Challenge
The lighting solution needed to:
- Deliver 80 lux across external maintenance platforms
- Provide low-glare, high-CRI lighting inside maintenance sheds
- Operate with DALI controls for networked intelligent management
- Use remote drivers for reduced servicing at height
- Maintain zero upward spill to protect dark-sky environments
- Comply with obtrusive light standards given surrounding residences
- Ensure uniform illumination at varied mounting heights across a large, multi-function site
These requirements demanded a highly adaptable and precisely engineered LED lighting system capable of delivering consistent lumen output across an expansive and diverse rail maintenance precinct.
Lighting Strategy
Tigerlight’s in-house engineers created a site-wide lighting plan spanning:
- Indoor maintenance sheds
- External maintenance platforms
- Rail tracks and overhead service areas
- Roadways and heavy-vehicle routes
- Carparks and security perimeters
Key design elements included:
- MegaFlood luminaires ranging from 20 W to 200 W, matched to mounting heights and visual task requirements
- T4M and T4S optical lenses to achieve wide, controlled distribution with minimal spill
- Zero-tilt spigot brackets and trunnion mounts for precise aiming
- 3000 K, 80 CRI for accurate inspection lighting
- DALI control integration for programmable, energy-efficient lighting management
- Placement of remote drivers to ensure safe, low-impact maintenance
This strategy delivered controlled, uniform lighting suitable for high-precision rail maintenance.

The Solution
Tigerlight supplied and integrated more than 840 LED luminaires across the 25-hectare Mindyarra facility, including:
MegaFlood Modular LED Floodlights (40 W–200 W)
- Used across indoor bays, external platforms, tracks, roadways and carparks
- Multiple wattages optimised for specific zones and mounting heights
- Over 16 optical distributions, including T4M and T4S
- 3000 K CCT and 80 CRI for technician-level clarity
- Polyester-coated housings with custom colours
- Zero upward light spill to maintain dark-sky compliance
Sentry Wall Pack & Emergency Wall Pack Lights
- Installed around the perimeter and external walls
- 40 W and 80 W options for security and safety lighting
The modular nature of the MegaFlood platform allowed a consistent aesthetic across the entire site while meeting performance, safety, and environmental objectives.
Implementation
The installation involved:
- Deployment of MegaFlood luminaires across all operational zones
- Remote drivers positioned for easy access and simplified future servicing
- Precision aiming to maintain downward-focused distribution
- Seamless integration with the site-wide DALI control network
- Custom powder-coated luminaires matched to architectural requirements
- Full compliance with Australian lighting standards and Transport for NSW operational criteria
The final lighting system delivered high uniformity, excellent colour rendering for maintenance tasks, and low obtrusive light levels to protect residential boundaries and surrounding dark-sky environments.
