Bravus Mining and Resources required a purpose-built lighting upgrade for the Carmichael mine’s Tyre Bay and Heavy Vehicle Service Bays.

These high-intensity work zones support complex maintenance activities on large mining vehicles, which means visibility, uniformity and glare control are essential for safety and productivity.

The Carmichael mine is located in Queensland’s North Galilee Basin, approximately 160 kilometres north-west of Clermont. Producing about 10 million tonnes of export-grade thermal coal each year, the mine operates in a harsh environment where reliable, compliant and engineered lighting is critical.

Tigerlight was engaged to design a modern LED lighting solution that improved illumination, enhanced worker visibility, ensured compliance with strict safety standards and performed reliably under mining conditions.

Key Outcomes

  • 400 lux vertical and horizontal illumination achieved
  • High uniformity, minimal glare and reduced shadowing across all bays
  • Full compliance with AS 1680.2.4:2017 and AS 1680.5
  • Emergency lighting integrated across walkways and critical safety points
  • Tailored optical design to illuminate large machinery profiles
  • Durable IK10 IP66 LED fittings designed for harsh mining environments
Bravus Mine

The Challenge

The lighting solution needed to:

  • Achieve high vertical and horizontal illumination for heavy vehicle maintenance
  • Reduce glare and eliminate shadowing around large machinery
  • Improve uniformity across bays, walkways and gantries
  • Integrate compliant emergency lighting for safe movement and rapid evacuation
  • Ensure full compliance with AS 1680.2.4:2017 and AS 1680.5
  • Resist dust, vibration and corrosive conditions typical of mine sites

Lighting Strategy

Tigerlight’s lighting engineers prepared a detailed lighting plan that:

  • Delivered 400 lux vertical and horizontal illumination
  • Specified 480 W MegaFlood LED Floodlights with T4M forward-throw optics to maximise coverage
  • Positioned luminaires at zero degrees to minimise glare and improve visibility
  • Installed Primo LED highbays for overhead task lighting
  • Used Mako Area and Mako Emergency Lights across walkways, stairways and gantries
  • Positioned Green LED Mako fittings for Emergency Eyewash Stations to ensure rapid identification
  • Added Silverback IK10 IP66 battens under walkways and along walls for reliable access illumination

The strategy ensured consistent lighting regardless of the size or position of vehicles within each bay.

The Solution

Tigerlight supplied and integrated a suite of industrial-grade luminaires designed for mining environments.

Tyre Bay

  • 18 × 480 W MegaFlood LED Floodlights
  • 6 × Mako Emergency Lights
  • 3 × Primo 26K LED Highbays

Service Bays

  • 26 × 480 W MegaFlood LED Floodlights
  • 7 × 200 W MegaFlood LED Floodlights
  • 8 × Primo 21K LED Highbays
  • 5 × Mako Area Lights
  • 25 × Mako Emergency Lights
  • 7 × Silverback IK10 IP66 Battens

MegaFlood LED Floodlights equipped with T4M optics illuminated the full vertical height of vehicles and delivered low-glare, even lighting across work surfaces. Mounted above bay walls and on poles using trunnion brackets, these floodlights ensured uniform visibility throughout the maintenance areas.

Mako Area Lights and Mako Emergency Lights were installed on Swivelpoles positioned along walkways, stairways and gantries to provide safe movement and reliable emergency illumination. Silverback battens were mounted under walkways and on walls to create consistent lighting along access routes.

Emergency Eyewash Stations were highlighted with Green LED Mako Area Lights to ensure rapid identification.
